Parkade Elementary’s stated mission is “Together . . . inspiring life long learners.” That is the task of the school’s teachers and of Betsy Baker, the first female principal in the history of the school, which opened in 1958.
Parkade, which is located on the north side of town, has earned a reputation for using technology in the classroom. In 2001, the school was honored by the SBC Foundation and the National Association of Partners in Education Program “Bridging the Digital Divide.“
The program selected the school as one of its 15 Honorable Mention schools after Parkade introduced technology to turn third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms into eMINTS (enhancing Missouri’s Instructional Networked Teaching Strategies) classrooms. These rooms have one computer for every two students and also feature tools such as scanners and digital cameras.
Students at Parkade have continued to have the opportunity to work with technology. The school’s Web Page Club allows fourth- and fifth-graders create Web sites without losing valuable class time.
“There is not time during the day to work on Web pages and things like that,” Baker told the Missourian in a previous article. “It’s a good use of technology because it gives them use of it in a creative way, but it doesn’t take away from instruction during the day.”
