Lee Elementary is an expressive arts school, which means they incorporate various forms of art such as painting, dance and music into the curriculum. Principal Teresa VanDover stresses the importance of keeping students engaged by using this method. She says this gives students have multiple ways to access knowledge and creates an atmosphere where students will enjoy learning and want to know more.
The unique lesson plans are created through the collaboration of general classroom teachers and art teachers. They figure out how to provide an artistic focus while mixing in the standard teaching approach.
Lee also has a diverse student body. There are high numbers of Asian, Hispanic and black students, which creates a very culture-rich environnment for students, school administrators say. Lee utilizes this diversity by teaching about many different cultures and having students create art that highlights each one.
