William E. Connolly to speak on spirituality, belief and time

COLUMBIA — Finding the connections between spirituality, belief and time will be the topic of a lecture by William E. Connolly at 3 p.m. on Friday at MU's Cornell Hall, room 206.

Connolly, a professor of political science at Johns Hopkins University, will speak about the issues raised in his latest book, "Capitalism and Christianity, American Style."

The lecture is co-sponsored by the Center on Religion and the Professions.

Connolly's book looks at the evangelical-capitalist machine and how it works in American life, according to the publisher's Web site. The author calls for a challenge from the democratic left against the conservative hold on American religious and economic culture.

Connolly is known for his analysis of social science and work with postmodern philosophy in political theory. His previous books include "Identity/Difference" and "Pluralism."

Other sponsors include the College of Arts and Science, Center for Arts and Humanities, English department, political science department and the German and Russian studies department.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
